Charles Hayes
Founder of Schoolboy PatrolBiography
Mr. Hayes was president of the Chicago Motor Club in the 1920s when several children at a school crossing were killed by a speeding car. Horrified by the incident, Mr. Hayes pledged to help prevent such a tragedy from happening again. Two dozen boys were trained, and the first safety patrol was established with Mr. Hayes? guidance. His determination to make school children safer is a legacy that lives on through the hard work of AAA clubs, educators and hundreds of safety patrollers across the country.
